Mass Timber

Mass timber construction -- a system where the load-bearing structure of large buildings is constructed rom engineered wood – is quickly spreading throughout the United States. While mass timber presents opportunities for aesthetics, cost savings, and greenhouse gas emissions reductions and storage, the adoption of a new building method also presents challenges and opportunities.

MIFBI has been integral in the growth of mass timber in Michigan, beginning with the first workshop in 2017, continuing with a Summit in 2020, and subsequent collaboration on webinars and other programs with MassTimber@MSU.

MIFBI continues its involvement in mass timber, yet as the construction becomes more mainstream, MIFBI shifts our gears to remain true to our mission and focused on the innovation opportunities in this space, including, but not limited to, the development and utilization of forest materials as coatings, adhesives, and other applications for the mass timber market.
